Brinjal Pepper Kootu

A spicy kootu made with brinjal and green gram dhal. This can be served with hot rice. Instead of oil, you can use one teaspoon ghee for seasoning to get enhanced flavour to the kootu.

A spicy kootu made with brinjal and green gram dhal. This can be served with hot rice. Instead of oil, you can use one teaspoon ghee for seasoning to get enhanced flavour to the kootu.

Ingredients

  • Brinjal – 4 to 5 Nos

  • Green Gram Dhal – ¼ cup

  • Pepper – 1 tablespoon

  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • Sambar Powder – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon

  • Urad dhal – 2 teaspoon

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Cook the green gram dhal till soft and cut the brinjals into small pieces.
  • Place the brinjal pieces in a vessel and add salt, sambar powder, turmeric powder and just enough water to cover the vegetables.
  • Cook the vegetable on medium flame till it is soft.
  • Then, add the cooked dhal and mix well.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan and add mustard and urad dhal, frying till they become light brown. Coarsely powder pepper and add it to the oil.
  • Stir in the curry leaves, then add this seasoning to the vegetable and mix well.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Tips
  • For enhanced flavour, replace oil with one teaspoon of ghee for seasoning.

  2. I would like to try this recipe. Can you please clarify whether ‘Green gram dhal’ is Payatham paruppu or Muzhu payaru/ whole moong ( green coloured ) ? Thanks.
