This kichadi made with corn meal can be served with any chutney

Ingredients

  • Corn Meal – 1 cup

  • Onion (Medium size) – 1/2

  • Green chillies – 2

  • Carrot -1

  • Tomato – 1

  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 teaspoon

  • Curry Leaves – few

  • Oil – 2 tablespoons

  • Mustard – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Aniseeds – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Cinnamon stick – 1 small piece

  • Cloves – 2

  • Bay Leaf – a small piece

  • Whole cardamom – 1

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

  • Water – 3 cups

Directions

  • In a kadai put a teaspoon of oil and fry the corn meal for one or two minutes. Remove and keep aside.
  • Chop onion lengthwise. Cut the carrot into small cubes. Cut tomato into medium size pieces. Slit green chillies into two lengthwise.
  • In a kadai put the oil and when it is hot add mustard. When it pops up, add aniseeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom, bay leaves and sauté for a second.
  • Then add chopped onion, green chillies, curry leaves along with ginger-garlic paste. (I used a small piece of fresh ginger and three small garlic flakes chopped finely). Fry for few seconds and add carrot pieces and further fry it for few more seconds.
  • Then add tomato pieces and just give a stir and add three cups of water along with salt. Close with a lid and bring to boil.
  • When it starts boiling, add the fried corn meal and stir well. Close with a lid and cook on medium flame for few minutes or till it absorbs all the water and cooked soft.
  • Remove the lid and stir for few seconds on low flame and remove.

Notes

  • You can also add more vegetables like green peas, french beans, cauliflower, potato, etc.

  2. Anuradha R

Hello Madam, tried many of your recipes and kolams and they came out well. Can we also have something like weekly menu plan?

    • Thank you Anuradha for your kind comments. Regarding weekly menu – it depends upon one’s choice, for how many people we have to cook and time available for cooking etc. Normally, if you make Sambar and poriyal one day, next day you can make “Poricha Kuzhambu” and spicy fry. Next day Rasam and Kootu – then Morkuzhambu and Usili etc. It also depends upon the season like summer, winter, rainy season etc. Menu should be flexible and we cannot fix menu plan as caterers.

  3. I tried this recipe twice. Both the times it came out well. Thanks for this nutritious recipe!

  5. What is cornmeal? Can we make it at home or else we need to buy in stores?May I know the tamil name of it?

    • Hi Suganya,

It is available in the grocery stores. It is called Corn Rawa (Chola rawa). Actually it is sold as “Corn Meal”. You can check the packet and you will find tiny yellow colour rava. If you cannot get it near your place, you can grind the dried yellow corn pearls coarsely and use it.

is corn meal is different from corn flour, just want to know. even if different it is tasty

    • Hi Muthu,

Yes. Corn flour and corn meal are different. Corn flour is the fine white flour which we use in gravies/soups and as a binding agent in frying items. Corn rawa is sold as Corn Meal used in bread making and other dishes.

  14. Hi Kamala,
I made Upma using corn meal, same reciepie as for rava upma. it turned out very well.

  15. Hello,
I tried the corn meal kichidi today. It came out well but only thing is it was more like poritge not like upma. I used the same water measurement which you have posted. And what side dish can we have for this?

    • Hi Viji,

If you cook the upma stirring continuously till it become thick, it will come like upma. If the quality of the corn meal you used is in smaller size, then you can reduce the water quantity. Coconut chutney go well with this upma.

  16. Namaskaram,

Thanks for this wonderful recipe. Since My MIL is a diabetic, its a challenge fr me everyday to make tasty as well as healthy diet. And this kichidi became a instant hit..I didnt add the aniseed, since we are not into too much masala stuff. Yet to try corn adai and idli.

    Regards
