Ingredients

  • Cabbage chopped finely – 1 medium bowl

  • Green peas – 1/2 cup

  • Tamarind juice – 2 to 3 tablespoon

  • Green Gram Dhal – 1/4 cup

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • For Grinding:
  • Coconut gratings – 2 tablespoon

  • Coriander Seeds – 1 tablespoon

  • Red Chillies – 2

  • Pepper – 1 teaspoon

  • For seasoning:
  • Onion – 1

  • Green Chillies – 2

  • Curry Leaves – few

  • Oil – 1 tablespoon

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Cook green gram dhal along with turmeric powder in a pot over medium flame until it’s soft.
  • Chop onion finely, and slit green chillies lengthwise.
  • In a teaspoon of oil, fry red chillies, coriander seeds, pepper and coconut gratings until fragrant, then grind to a fine paste.
  • In a separate pan, heat oil over a medium flame and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop, add chopped onion, slit green chillies and curry leaves and fry until the onion turns translucent.
  • Add green peas and fry for a few minutes, then add cabbage pieces and mix well.
  • Add the ground paste, salt, and a splash of water, stirring to combine.
  • Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low heat until the cabbage is cooked through.
  • Add tamarind juice and cooked dhal, stirring to combine.
  • Allow everything to simmer for a few more minutes before removing from the heat.

  13. hello, lovely site! I wanted to try the cucumber kootu. Is green gram dhall in Tamil pasi parupu … As in the yellow colour lentil used for pongal?

    Or is it the green colour dhall, which normally requires couple of hours soaking?
