A side dish made with plantain (raw banana) and tamarind. This dish is served for lunch or dinner with steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • Raw Green Banana – 1

  • Red Chillies – 2 Nos

  • Coriander seeds – 2 teaspoons

  • Black Pepper – 1 teaspoon

  • Fenugreek – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric Powder – ¼ teaspoon

  • Tamarind – Big gooseberry size

  • Oil – 2 to 3 tablespoons

  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon

  • Asafoetida powder – ½ teaspoon

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Remove the skin from banana and cut it into medium size pieces and put it in water.
  • Dry fry red chillies, coriander seeds, pepper, fenugreek and powder it coarsely.
  • Soak tamarind in ¼ cup water and take out thick juice. (Or you can use tamarind paste mixed with ¼ cup water).
  • In a kadai add the oil and when it is hot add mustard.
  • When it pops up add asafetida powder and curry leaves. Then add banana pieces along with turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and stir fry for few minutes.
  • Add tamarind juice and sprinkle two to three handful of water and mix well. Close with lid and cook till the banana is soft.
  • Remove the lid and keep it on low flame till it absorbed all the water and dry.
  • Then sprinkle the ground chilli powder and again stir fry for few more seconds.

  5. I usually make this at home but I use only red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Your idea of putting coriander seed, fenugreek and pepper seems good. Shall try it sometime.

  9. A Suggestion – It would be very handy to have a separate tab for Poriyal in your main categories menu. I’ve noticed it at the bottom of the page but still having it on the top will be useful.
