Spicy Oats Kozhukattai

This kozhukattai is made with Oats, coconut gratings and garnished with other spices like idli milagai podi.

This kozhukattai is made with Oats, coconut gratings and garnished with other spices like idli milagai podi

Ingredients

  • Oats – 1 cup

  • Rice flour – 1 cup

  • Coconut gratings – 1/2 cup

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste

  • For seasoning:
  • Oil – 2 teaspoons

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Bengal gram dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Onion chopped – one to two tablespoons

  • Curry Leaves – few

  • Pepper powder – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Idli Milagai Podi – 1 teaspoon

Directions

  • Grind the oats to a fine powder and mix with rice flour. Add salt and coconut gratings. Bring two cups of water to boil and add little by little to the flour and make a soft dough (like chapati dough). Make lemon size balls and keep it aside.
  • In a thick bottomed vessel pour enough water (say about 5 to 6 cups) and bring to boil. When it starts boiling, gently drop 3 to 4 balls. Reduce to heat to medium. Allow to cook for two minutes.
    Then add another 4 balls. Repeat this till you finish all the balls.
    Gently stir using a flat spoon.
    Allow to cook in low heat for five to ten minutes.
    You can also check one ball with a spoon whether it is cooked well in the middle also.
    Remove from stove and take out all the balls from the water.
  • Put a kadai on the stove and add oil. When it is hot, add mustard seeds. When it pops up add bengal gram dhal and fry till it turns light brown.
  • Then add chopped onion and curry leaves and fry for a while.
  • Then add the cooked balls and sprinkle the pepper powder and Idli Milagai Podi and mix well.
  • Remove from stove and serve as evening snack.

  13. I just tried it.It was very tasty.I wasn’t sure about the texture.It was bit sticky.Is that texture correct?Could u please confirm it??Did i make any mistake.??
    Very tasty.I reserved few balls before adding idli podi and gave it to my toddler,she enjoyed it. I added bit of chili flakes in the oats dough.

    can we steam the balls in idli cooker for 5 to 10 minutes instead of the above procedure? I am bit scared if the balls will dissolve while adding them in boiling water.

    • Hi Nithya Sukumaran,

      Yes. You can steam it in idli cooker. However, it will be slightly harder than the balls cooked in the above procedure. Moreover, you need not worry about the balls breaking in water. When you add the balls (3 to 4 at a time) in the boiling water, it will immediately harden and starts cooking. So, it will not break. You have to allow the water boils well and after adding the balls, you should not stir it immediately. The dough should also be thick. If you follow the procedure correctly, then it will not break.

  16. oats kozhukattai – came out good, but I personally prefer sweet kozhukattai- so I will try to steam the kozhukattai in coconut milk with some sugar…

      Thank you for your feed back. Yes. We can make sweet Kozhukattai too. Make a small balls and steam it and then put it in the milk. Or you can add jaggery to oats and make sweet kozhuttati. Either way it tastes good.

    The taste was good but the kozhukkattai was a little bit sticky inside. May be it was not cooked well?! What is the right ‘patham’ to take out the oats balls from the boiling water?

    • Hi Kalpagam,

      Once the balls are floating on top, you can take out a ball and test it by inserting a knife or breaking it into two. Moreover, the oats kozhukattai will be a bit stickly only because of its nature.

  27. Hey Kamala the recipe is really good. Love your site. Need a small tip. The kozhukattai i made was hard .i used the same measures you mentioned. Is there any way they can turn out to be soft and fluffy?

      This Oats Kozhukattai is little harder than the rice kozhukattai. Since oats is sticky, the kozhukattai is hard. You can eat it hot.
