This sweet puttu is made with Ragi Flour, sugar and coconut gratings. We can substitute sugar with jaggery powder also.

Ingredients

  • Ragi Flour – 1 cup

  • Sugar – 1/4 cup or as per taste

  • Fresh coconut gratings – 1/2 cup

  • Cardamom powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Ghee – 2 to 3 teaspoons

  • Salt – One or two pinches

Directions

  • Add Ragi flour in a big bowl and add salt. Sprinkle little water and mix well. If you hold the flour in your palm and press, it should be like a ball and put it back, it should fall loosely. This is the correct texture for making puttu.
  • Take a clean wet cloth, put the ragi flour on it and make a loose bundle. Keep this bundle on the idli plate and steam cook it for ten minutes.
  • Remove the bundle and transfer the cooked flour to another bowl. Allow to cool.
  • Then add ghee (melt it and add) sugar, cardamom powder and coconut gratings. Mix well and serve.

Notes

  • Instead of sugar, we can add jaggery powder also.

It depends what we measure in the cup. When you take any cup or bowl, use the same cup or bowl for measuring other ingredients also. For your information, following is from answers.com:

    Granulated sugar: 1 cup = 200 grams
Brown sugar: 1 cup, packed = 220 grams
Sifted white flour: 1 cup = 125 grams
White rice, uncooked: 1 cup = 185 grams
White rice, cooked: 1 cup = 175 grams
    Butter: 1 cup = 227 grams
    Almonds, slivered: 1 cup = 108 grams
    Oil: 1 cup = 224 grams
    Maple syrup: 1 cup = 322 grams
    Milk, non-fat: 1 cup = 245 grams
    Milk, sweetened condensed: 306 grams
    Broccoli, flowerets: 1 cup = 71 grams
    Raisins: 1 cup, packed = 165 grams
    Milk, dry: 1 cup = 68 grams
    Yogurt: 1 cup = 245 grams
    Water: 1 cup = 236 grams
    Confectioners sugar: 1 C = 110 g
    Cocoa: 1 C = 125 g

  7. I tried ragi puttu this weekend and turned out AWESOME 🙂
Instead putting in a cloth i followed the following steps(Mom’s tip)
    1. Fill cooker with water
    2. Fill a vessel with water and keep inside cooker
    3. In a broad plate, bowl, add the ragi and place it above the vessel.
    4. Steam as usual.

  8. hi kalma,
Can you please telme how much ragi as well as sugar will i require for this recipe to make 1 serving?pls tellme the proportions in grams for 1 serving.

    • One serving may be 50 grams. But I never measure the ingredients in grams, just use cups and spoons. You can take 3 to 4 tablespoons of flour and 2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar and two to three tablespoon of coconut gratings for one serving.
