Ingredients

  • Black Ellu (Til seeds) – 4 tablespoons

  • Coconut gratings – 3 tablespoons

  • Urad dhal – 1 tablespoon

  • Red Chillies – 6

  • Tamarind – Big gooseberry size

  • Garlic – 2 pearls

  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Place the Ellu (Til Seeds) in a kadai and dry-roast until they begin to crackle. Once done, transfer them to a separate bowl.
  • In the same kadai, add a teaspoon of oil and sauté urad dal until it turns a light brown color.
  • Add in the red chillies, garlic pearls, and tamarind, and sauté for a few moments.
  • Stir in the coconut gratings, sauté briefly, and then turn off the heat.
  • After the mixture has cooled, transfer all the roasted ingredients to a blender. Add salt and grind into a mixture.
  • To achieve a dough-like consistency, add one or two tablespoons of water and blend until smooth.

  5. I tried your ellu thuvaiyal yesterday. I used white variety as I happened to have it on hand. It was awesome. My daughter who loves peanut chutney thought it was peanut chutney. What a great healthy substitute. Thank you.
