Chow chow pepper kootu is a traditional South Indian dish made with chayote (chow chow) and black pepper cooked in a coconut gravy. It is a simple yet delicious dish that is typically served with rice or roti. hi kamala,
tried this kootu with bottlegourd..usually i only use red chillies for grinding with cocounut and jeera, but tried your recipe with pepper.. i should say the taste was very good, different flavour.
Cheers
Anu
Thank you Anu. Taking time and writing your views. Black pepper is better than red chillies. Wherever possible, we can reduce red chillies and add pepper.
Kamala, hey my menu for today’s lunch is this kootu. I also follow the same method. I don’t add onions and also I add some grated coconuts while seasoning.
Hi Jayasree, Thank you for writing. Yes. If we avoid onion, the kootu will stay good for longer time also. Only purpose of adding onion is to get that extra aroma to Kootu.

Vanakam Kamala, I try a lot of your recipes- they turn out just great. I have recommended it to friends and family. Thank you for sharing these yummy recipes with others. God bless.
Thank you Manju for your kind feed back and recommending to your friends.
I made this yesterday with a slight variation. Used cucumber instead and excluded the small onion as I didn’t have it. It was delicious and hearty. My husband absolutely loved it.
What I liked about your recipes is that you give the exact, foolproof measurement / proportion of spices unlike other food blogs. It comes out perfect. Glad I found this site.
Thank you Smitha for your kind words.
