Chow Chow Pepper Kootu

Chow chow pepper kootu is a traditional South Indian dish made with chayote (chow chow) and black pepper cooked in a coconut gravy. A spicy gravy (kootu) that is served as side dish with rice. It can also be taken mixed with steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • Chow Chow – 1 No

  • Green Gram Dhal – ¼ cup

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • Salt – ½ teaspoon or as per taste

  • To fry and grind
  • Red Chilli – 2 Nos

  • Black Pepper – 1 teaspoon

  • Jeera (Cumin) – ½ teaspoon

  • Urad Dhal – 2 teaspoon

  • Coconut gratings – 2 tablespoon

  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • For seasoning
  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon

  • Urad Dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Sambar Onion – 2 Nos (Chopped finely)

Directions

  • Cook Green gram dal along with a pinch of turmeric powder in open vessel till 3/4th cooked.
  • Remove the skin from chow chow and cut into small pieces.
  • Add these pieces to the dal along with salt. Cover with lid and cook on medium flame till soft.
  • Meantime, in a kadai put a teaspoon of oil and fry red chillies, urad dhal, pepper, jeera for one to two seconds and finally add the coconut gratings and fry for one more second. Remove and cool it.
  • Grind it to a fine paste.
  • When the vegetable is cooked well, add the ground paste along with little water and mix well. Allow to boil for few minutes on low heat.
  • Season it with mustard, urad dhal, curry leaves and chopped onion.

    tried this kootu with bottlegourd..usually i only use red chillies for grinding with cocounut and jeera, but tried your recipe with pepper.. i should say the taste was very good, different flavour.

  4. Thank you Anu. Taking time and writing your views. Black pepper is better than red chillies. Wherever possible, we can reduce red chillies and add pepper.

  5. Kamala, hey my menu for today’s lunch is this kootu. I also follow the same method. I don’t add onions and also I add some grated coconuts while seasoning.

  6. Hi Jayasree, Thank you for writing. Yes. If we avoid onion, the kootu will stay good for longer time also. Only purpose of adding onion is to get that extra aroma to Kootu.

  11. I made this yesterday with a slight variation. Used cucumber instead and excluded the small onion as I didn’t have it. It was delicious and hearty. My husband absolutely loved it.
