This yellow pumpkin curry can be served as a side dish or mix it with hot rice.

Ingredients

  • Yellow pumpkin (tender pumpkin tastes good) – 1 big piece

  • Green Gram dhal (Pasi paruppu / Payatham Paruppu) – 1/2 cup

  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Sambar powder – 1 teaspoon

  • Small tomato- 1 No

  • Onion chopped finely – 1 tablespoon

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Curry Leaves – few

Directions

  • Cook green gram dhal along with a pinch of turmeric powder till soft.
  • Remove the skin and seeds from the pumpkin. Cut into bite size pieces.
  • In a frying pan, put one teaspoon oil. When it is hot add mustard seed. When it pops up add urad dhal, asafoetida powder and fry till the dhal becomes light brown.
  • Add onion and curry leaves. Fry for a while and add tomato pieces and fry.
  • Add pumpkin pieces.
  • Add turmeric powder, sambar powder and salt.
  • Add a cup of water just to cover the vegetable. Mix it and cook till the vegetable is soft.
  • Now add the cooked dhal and once again mix it well and allow to boil and remove.

Notes

  • Can be served as side dish for any spicy kuzhambu or taken with hot steamed rice.
