This side dish made with Okra (vendaikai) can be served with rice. It also goes well with Chapatis too.

Ingredients

  • Okra (Vendaikai) – 15 to 20 Nos

  • Tomato – 1

  • Green Gram Dhal – 1/4 cup

  • Sambar powder – 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • Salt – ½ teaspoon or as per taste

  • For seasoning:
  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon

  • Urad dal – 1 teaspoon

  • Red Chilies – 2

  • Asafoetida Powder – a pinch

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Sambar Onion – 2 Nos

Directions

  • Wash, wipe and cut okra into small rounds. Chop onion and tomato finely.
  • Add enough water to the green gram dal (moong dal). Add turmeric powder and cook till it is soft.
  • In a non stick pan put one or two teaspoons of oil.
  • Add okra pieces and stir fry till the stickiness of okra disappears.
  • Then add tomato pieces and stir well and fry for few more seconds.
  • Add sambar powder and salt. Mix well. Add a cup of water. Close with a lid and cook till the okra is soft.
  • Add the cooked dal and mix it well. Allow to boil for few seconds.
  • In a small kadai put a teaspoon of oil. When it is hot add mustard.
  • When it starts crackling add urad dal, asafoetida powder, red chillies, curry leaves and chopped onion.
  • Fry for few seconds and add this seasoning over the kootu.
  • Mix well and remove.
