Paruppu Podi (Dal Powder)

Paruppu podi is a traditional South Indian condiment consisting of lentils, spices, and herbs. Toor dal, chana dal are dry roasted along with red chili, cumin seeds and peppercorns. After grinding them into a fine powder, paruppu podi is used as a flavor enhancer and side dish. It is commonly mixed with rice and ghee, or sprinkled on top of idli and dosa. The flavors are earthy, nutty, and mildly spicy, providing both taste and nutrition. 

Mix this paruppu podi with a teaspoon of ghee or gingelly oil and serve it with hot rice and fried appalam.

This paruppu podi is mixed with a teaspoon of ghee or gingelly oil to hot rice and eat with fried appalam.

Ingredients

  • Toor Dal – 1 cup

  • Chutney Dal (Pottu kadalai) – 1/4 cup

  • Red Chillies – 4

  • Asafoetida- pea size

  • Jeera (Cumin) – 1 teaspoon

  • Black pepper – 1 teaspoon

  • Curry Leaves – 1 string

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • In a kadai put the Toor Dal and dry fry till it become light brown.
  • Before removing add red chillies to the Toor Dal and fry for few seconds and remove.
  • Put Black pepper and cumin in the kadai and fry for few seconds and remove.
  • Then put the Pottukadalai (chutney dal) and just fry hot to touch and remove.
  • Add curry leaves and fry till it become crisp.
  • Now put half teaspoon oil and fry the hard asafoetida.
  • Allow all the fried ingredients to cool down.
  • Add salt and grind to a fine powder. Store it in an airtight container.

Notes

  • You can also add few garlic flakes (just crush it and fry in a teaspoon of oil) to get some extra flavor to this Podi.
