Paruppu Podi (Dal Powder)

This paruppu podi is mixed with a teaspoon of ghee or gingelly oil to hot rice and eat with fried appalam. You can also try these other masala powders.

This paruppu podi is mixed with a teaspoon of ghee or gingelly oil to hot rice and eat with fried appalam.

Ingredients

  • Toor Dal – 1 cup

  • Chutney Dal (Pottu kadalai) – 1/4 cup

  • Red Chillies – 4

  • Asafoetida- pea size

  • Jeera (Cumin) – 1 teaspoon

  • Black pepper – 1 teaspoon

  • Curry Leaves- 1 string

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • In a kadai put the Toor Dal and dry fry till it become light brown.
  • Before removing add red chillies to the Toor Dal and fry for few seconds and remove.
  • Put Black pepper and cumin in the kadai and fry for few seconds and remove.
  • Then put the Pottukadalai (chutney dal) and just fry hot to touch and remove.
  • Add curry leaves and fry till it become crisp.
  • Now put half teaspoon oil and fry the hard asafoetida.
  • Allow all the fried ingredients to cool down.
  • Add salt and grind to a fine powder. Store it in an airtight container.

Notes

  • You can also add few garlic flakes (just crush it and fry in a teaspoon of oil) to get some extra flavor to this Podi.
