Kathirikai (Brinjal) Pirattal

”Pirattal” in Tamil means “Stir Fry”. This Brinjal curry is served with rice. It also goes well with Chapati too.

This recipe known as kathirikai pirattal is made with brinjal and served with rice or Indian bread.

Ingredients

  • Brinjal – 4

  • Red Chilli Powder – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Coriander Powder – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • onion – one (small size)

  • Garlic Cloves – 8 (small size)

  • Ginger – a small piece

  • Curry Leaves – few

  • Oil – 3 tablespoons

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Bengal Gram Dal – 1 teaspoon

  • Urad Dal – 1 teaspoon

  • Seeragam (cumin) – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Wash the brinjals and slice it lengthwise.
  • Chop onion, garlic, ginger, curry leaves finely.
  • In a kadai put a tablespoon of oil and add brinjal pieces.  Stir fry it on medium flame till it changes its color to light brown.  Remove and keep aside.
  • Same kadai pour the remaining oil and when it is hot add mustard.  
  • When it starts pop up, add Bengal gram dal, urad dal, cumin and asafoetida and fry till it turns golden brown.  
  • Add garlic and ginger and fry till garlic become light brown.  Add onion and curry leaves and fry for few seconds.
  • Add brinjal pieces and mix it.  
  • Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt.  Mix everything well.
  • Keep it on medium flame and stir fry till it become golden brown.
