Ingredients

  • Green Banana – 1

  • Onion – 1 small

  • Green Chilly – 1

  • Coconut gratings – 2 tablespoons

  • Sambar Podi – 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • Oil – 1 tablespoon

  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon

  • Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Sombu (aniseeds) – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon

Directions

  • Cut the banana in half and boil it with the skin on for five to seven minutes. Then peel and cool it. You can either grate it or gently mash it by hand.
  • Chop the onion and green chilli.
  • Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard seeds. When they pop, add urad dal and fry until light brown. Add onion, green chilli, curry leaves and fry well. Add crushed aniseeds and stir for a while.
  • Add banana, salt, turmeric powder and sambar powder and mix well. Cover with a lid and cook on low heat for four to five minutes. Finally, add coconut and stir everything well. Add lemon juice and turn off the heat.

Notes

  • If you don’t like the smell of aniseeds, you can skip them and add a pinch of asafoetida powder instead.
