A simple and easy varuval made with plantain (raw banana or vazhaikkai).  This goes well with sambar rice or Rasam rice.

Ingredients

  • Raw Banana (Plantain) – 1

  • Sambar Powder – 1 teaspoon heaped

  • Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon

  • Asafoetida Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

  • Oil – 2 tablespoon

Directions

  • Peel the skin off the banana and slice it into round pieces, about ¼ inch thick (or half round pieces). Place the slices in a bowl of water.
  • Wash the banana slices thoroughly, then remove them from the water and transfer them to a wide bowl.
  • Add sambar powder, turmeric powder, asafoetida powder, and salt to the banana slices. Sprinkle enough water to cover the vegetable and mix well. Set aside for ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Heat oil in a flat kadai or tawa. Once the oil is hot, add the banana slices, ensuring they are separated. Cover with a lid.
  • Cook on low heat for five to ten minutes, gently turning the pieces occasionally.
  • Remove the lid and continue cooking the banana slices on low heat until they turn golden brown.
  • These improvements make the instructions clearer and more concise.
