This delightful kozhukattai offers a unique twist to the classic rice flour version. Made with Aval (Poha) and jaggery, this treat is incredibly soft and gentle on the stomach, making it a perfect option for an evening snack.

Ingredients

  • Aval (Poha) – 1 cup

  • Powdered jaggery – ¾ cup

  • Coconut gratings – ½ cup

  • Cardamom powder – ½ teaspoon

  • Ghee – 1 to 2 teaspoons

Directions

  • Dry roast the Aval (Poha) in a kadai for a few minutes, then transfer to a plate to cool.
  • Once cooled, grind the roasted poha in a mixer jar to a coarse powder.
  • In a separate pot, boil 1 ½ cups of water. Add the jaggery and bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove and strain the jaggery water to remove impurities.
  • Pour the strained jaggery water into a thick-bottomed vessel and bring it to a boil again. When it starts boiling, reduce the heat and slowly add the poha flour, stirring continuously.
  • Add cardamom powder, grated coconut, and ghee. Mix well until a thick dough forms. Remove from heat and allow it to cool.
  • Apply a little ghee to your palms. Take a small lemon-sized portion of the dough and shape it into a ball. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  • Grease a steamer plate or idli plate with ghee and place the kozhukattai balls on the plate. Steam them for seven to eight minutes.
