Ingredients
Ragi Flour – 1 cup
Sugar – 1/4 cup or as per taste
Fresh coconut gratings – 1/2 cup
Cardamom powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Ghee – 2 to 3 teaspoons
Salt – One or two pinches
Directions
- Add Ragi flour in a big bowl and add salt. Sprinkle little water and mix well. If you hold the flour in your palm and press, it should be like a ball and put it back, it should fall loosely. This is the correct texture for making puttu.
- Take a clean wet cloth, put the ragi flour on it and make a loose bundle. Keep this bundle on the idli plate and steam cook it for ten minutes.
- Remove the bundle and transfer the cooked flour to another bowl. Allow to cool.
- Then add ghee (melt it and add) sugar, cardamom powder and coconut gratings. Mix well and serve.
Notes
- Instead of sugar, we can add jaggery powder also.

Granulated sugar: 1 cup = 200 grams
Brown sugar: 1 cup, packed = 220 grams
Sifted white flour: 1 cup = 125 grams

White rice, cooked: 1 cup = 175 grams
Butter: 1 cup = 227 grams
Almonds, slivered: 1 cup = 108 grams
Oil: 1 cup = 224 grams
Maple syrup: 1 cup = 322 grams
Milk, non-fat: 1 cup = 245 grams
Milk, sweetened condensed: 306 grams
Broccoli, flowerets: 1 cup = 71 grams
Raisins: 1 cup, packed = 165 grams
Milk, dry: 1 cup = 68 grams

Wishing u too happy Diwali…
I tried ragi puttu this weekend and turned out AWESOME 🙂
Instead putting in a cloth i followed the following steps(Mom’s tip)
1. Fill cooker with water
2. Fill a vessel with water and keep inside cooker
3. In a broad plate, bowl, add the ragi and place it above the vessel.
4. Steam as usual.
Hi Preethi,
Thank you for sharing your mom’s tip. Now-a-days, we get the special steamer vessels (with small holes) and steamer also.
hi kalma,
Can you please telme how much ragi as well as sugar will i require for this recipe to make 1 serving?pls tellme the proportions in grams for 1 serving.
One serving may be 50 grams. But I never measure the ingredients in grams, just use cups and spoons. You can take 3 to 4 tablespoons of flour and 2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar and two to three tablespoon of coconut gratings for one serving.

Thank you Rajesh.
Aunty can i prepare the same with Kambu and Kezhvaragu flour mixed in equal proportions?
Yes. We can mix any flour and make the puttu. Only difference slight variation in taste.
Kezhveragu is nothing but ragi.
I made this ragi puttu recently. Came out really well. Your instructions are very clear. Thank you!
