This easy and quick Poriyal is made with Chow Chow (Chayote) also called as “Bangalore Kathirikai” and served as side dish with steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • Chow Chow – 1 No

  • Onion – 1 No

  • Oil – 2 teaspoons

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Bengal gram dhal – 1 tablespoon

  • Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Asafotida Powder – a pinch

  • Red Chillies – 2 to 3

  • Curry Leaves – few

  • Coconut gratings- 2 tablespoons

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Remove the skin and inner white nut from chow chow. Cut it into small cubes.
  • Chop onion finely.
  • In a kadai put the oil and when it is hot, add mustard. When it starts pop up add Bengal gram dal, urad dal, red chillies (break it into two to three pieces), asafoetida powder and fry till the dals turn light brown.
  • Add chopped onion and curry leaves. Fry for a while.
  • Add chow chow pieces along with turmeric powder and salt. Mix it well.
  • Add half cup water and stir it. Close with a lid and cook on medium flame till all the water is absorbed and the vegetable is soft.
  • Finally add coconut gratings and mix it well and remove from stove.

    I used to waste this chow chow poriyal long back(in the hostel) , now, in the contrary, I appreciate it so much that I keep searching for new types of preparartions using this vegetable 🙂
