Discover the delectable and nutritious Suraikai curry, a beloved side dish from Tamil Nadu, South India. Perfect with rice or Indian breads.

Ingredients

  • Suraikai (Bottle Gourd) – a small one

  • Potato – 1

  • Onion – 1

  • Tomato – 1

  • Sambar Powder – 1 teaspoon

  • Red Chilli Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Garam Masala Powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste

  • For Seasoning:
  • Oil – 2 teaspoons

  • Cinnamon sticks – 2 small pieces

  • Sombu (fennel seeds) – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Coriander leaves – few for garnishing

Directions

  • Remove the skin and inner white seed portion from the bottle gourd. Cut it into bite size pieces.
  • Peel the skin from potato and cut it into same size pieces.
  • Chop Onion and tomato finely.
  • In a pressure cooker pour the oil and heat it. Add cinnamon sticks and fennel seeds.
  • Add chopped onion and fry for a while. Then add tomato pieces and fry till it mashes well.
  • Add sambar powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
  • Then add garam masala powder and mix it.
  • Now add bottle gourd and potato pieces and mix everything well.
  • Add a cup of water and stir well. Close with the lid and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.
  • Once the pressure is reduced, open the cooker and give a stir.
  • Transfer to another bowl and garnish with coriander leaves.
