Brinjal Pepper Kootu

  • Brinjal – 4 to 5 Nos
  • Green Gram Dhal – ¼ cup
  • Pepper – 1 tablespoon
  • Oil – 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – a pinch
  • Sambar Powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon
  • Urad dhal – 2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

  1. Cook the green gram dhal till soft. Cut the brinjals into small pieces and put it in a vessel. Add salt, sambar powder, turmeric powder and just enough water to cover the vegetable. Cook on medium flame till the vegetable is soft. Add cooked dhal and mix well.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard and urad dhal and fry till it become light brown. Powder pepper coarsely and add to the oil. Stir well and add curry leaves. Stir once again and add this seasoning to the vegetable. Mix well and remove.
  3. Tips: Instead of oil, you can use one teaspoon ghee for seasoning to get enhanced flavour to the kootu.

  4. I would like to try this recipe. Can you please clarify whether ‘Green gram dhal’ is Payatham paruppu or Muzhu payaru/ whole moong ( green coloured ) ? Thanks.

  5. I tried it and a couple of your other recipes as well. They all turned out perfect. Thanks a ton !
