Ingredients

  • Thuvar dal – 1/4 cup

  • Lemon – 2

  • Tomato – 1

  • Green chillies – 2

  • Fresh ginger – a small piece

  • Garlic flakes – 4 to 5 (Optional)

  • Turmeric powder – 2 pinches

  • Oil or Ghee = 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Jeeragam (Cumin) – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida Powder – 2 pinches

  • Coriander leaves – few

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • To make a delicious dal soup, start by cooking thuvar dal with a pinch of turmeric and enough water until soft. Mash the cooked dal, then add two to three cups of water to create a slightly thick dal water.
  • Next, chop ginger and tomato, slit the green chilies, and cut the lemons to squeeze out the juice. In a thick-bottomed kadai, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start to pop, add cumin seeds, asafetida powder, chopped ginger, whole garlic flakes, and slit green chilies. Stir for a few seconds before adding the chopped tomato and cooking for a bit longer.
  • Pour in the thuvar dal water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cover with a lid and bring to a boil. Once it starts boiling, turn off the heat and mix in the lemon juice. Stir well and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
