Rava Upma

Rava Upma is a savory South Indian dish made with semolina (rava) and a blend of spices. To prepare it, first fry the rava in a kadai with oil until it changes color. Then, set it aside. In the same kadai, heat more oil. Add mustard seeds and allow them to pop. Then, incorporate split dals. Fry them until they turn light brown. Next, stir in chopped onions, green chilies, ginger, and curry leaves, cooking until the onions are translucent. Add water and salt, bringing the mixture to a boil. Finally, gradually mix in the fried rava, stirring continuously until it forms a cohesive ball. Enjoy this flavorful and comforting dish as a breakfast or snack!

This common breakfast dish is made with Bombay rava (sooji), onion and a few mixed vegetables.

This common breakfast dish is made with bombay rava (sooji), onion and a few mixed vegetables.

Ingredients

  • Bombay Rava – 1 cup

  • Onion – 1

  • Green Chillies – 2

  • Fresh ginger – a small piece

  • Bengal gram dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Oil – 8 teaspoon

  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon

  • Salt – ½ teaspoon or as per taste

  • Cashew Nuts – few (optional)

Directions

  • In a kadai, put four teaspoon oil and fry the rava till it changes its colour. Remove it and keep it.
  • In the same kadai, add the remaining oil and when it is hot, add the mustard. When it pops up, add the dhals and fry till it turns light brown.
  • Add chopped onion, chillies, ginger and curry leaves. Fry till onions are transparent.
  • Add two cups of water along with salt. Bring to boil. When it starts boiling, slowly add the fried rawa and stir continuously till it turn like a big ball.

Notes

  • You can add a small carrot cut into pieces and little green peas along with onion in the upma. You can also sprinkle little lemon juice.
