“Sarasaparilla” a wonder herb, popularly known as “Nannari” is a natural coolant and has a lot of medicinal qualities. The strength of this herb lies in its roots. It has considerable effect to heal skin diseases and can decrease body temperature, rejuvenating the body. Apart from these, Sarasaparilla is effective for inflammations of liver and spleen, urinary disorders, wheezing, anemia and rheumatoid arthritis.
Nannari root is available in Sidda Medical shops. We can put the root in a pot of water and use that water for drinking purpose. Nannari concentrate or the syrup is available in all shops. We can make a herbal drink.
In a glass of cold water, add one or two teaspoons of lemon juice and two to three tablespoon of Nannari syrup and mix well. If you want, you can add a teaspoon of sugar or palm sugar to the juice.
Yes, nanari sharbet I have taken many times. And as you said i have also tried putting it in drinking water. It makes the water cool and also gives good aroma to the water.
Never heard of this, very interesting!
Just lookin at the glass has cooled me down! Could you guide how to make your own homemade nannari syrup. I dont want artificial additives (that u get when u buy it from shop)?
Many thanks,

Hi vg,
Thank you for visiting my site. I am not sure whether we can prepare the nannari syrup at home since it it a root and does not have any liquid to immediately make syrup at home. However, if you do not like the store bought syrup, then you can buy nannari root at the store and put it in a bowl of water. After sometime, you will get nice aroma from the water. You can use this water for making lemon juice. You will get nannari taste in the lemon juice.
I will soak nannari root in water and use that for the lemon juice. Great! Thanks Kamala.
Nannari root – 50 gms
Sugar – 1/2 Kg
Water – 1 litre
Jaggery(powdered) – 2 tblspn
milk – 1 tspn
Method
Nannari root resembles very much like the mahagony root, which is used for pickling.
Wash and clean the roots well. Slightly crush the roots using a stone mortar and pestle. The roots are very hard, so slight crushing is enough. Crushing is for better penetration of the nannari essence to the water.
Boil half the quantity of water. When it starts boiling, add the crushed roots to it and boil for 2 minutes. Remove from fire. Keep it aside.
Take another vessel with the remaining water. Add sugar to it.
When the sugar is fully dissolved and it starts boiling, add a teaspoon of milk to remove the scum if any.
Strain the water boiled with the root and add to the syrup.
Add jaggery and boil the syrup to one string consistency. Jaggery is added to get that golden hue to the syrup and it also adds to the thickness of the syrup.
Cool and bottle it.

(If possible go for panamkalkandu(palmsugar) instead of sugar which is more effective in cooling)
I bought a bottle of this Sarasparilla Juice from a popular shop in Palakkad, Kerala. all you need to do is to add the juice of half a fresh lime and mix with water and 2 cubes of Ice and stir into a beer mug. Its simply amazing ! most refreshing drink I have had in a long time.
Yes. It is true. The flavour itself makes us feel cool and refreshing.
