Ingredients
Thuvar Dal – 1/2 cup
Red Chillies – 3 to 4
Garlic Flakes (small size) – 10 to 12 Nos
Big Onion (Medium size) – 1
Tomato – 1
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Oil – 2 teaspoons
Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon
Fenugreek seeds – 4 to 5
Salt – 3/4 teaspoon or as per taste
Directions
- Begin by finely chopping the onions and tomatoes.
- In a pressure cooker, heat a teaspoon of oil and add thuvar dal. Sauté for a few seconds.
- Next, add the red chillies and garlic flakes, and fry them for a few more seconds.
- Now, incorporate the chopped onions into the cooker and fry them for two to three seconds.
- Add the chopped tomatoes to the mixture and continue frying for a little longer.
- Pour in two to two and a half cups of water, along with turmeric powder and salt. Stir the ingredients well, then close the pressure cooker and cook for 5 to 6 whistles, or until the dal is cooked thoroughly.
- Once the pressure has been released, carefully remove the lid and mash the dal well.
- In a small kadai, heat a teaspoon of oil. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds. Once they start crackling, add fenugreek seeds. Pour this aromatic seasoning over the mashed dal, stirring it in to enhance the flavors.
- The dal is now ready to be served. It pairs wonderfully with hot rice and can be accompanied by papad/appalam or any kind of pickle for a satisfying meal.

Yes. You can use green chilli. However, red chillies give more flavour to the dal.
