Vazhaikai (Banana) Puzhi Curry

  • Raw Green Banana – 1
  • Red Chillies – 2 Nos
  • Coriander seeds – 2 teaspoons
  • Black Pepper – 1 teaspoon
  • Fenugreek – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Tamarind – Big gooseberry size
  • Oil – 2 to 3 tablespoons
  • Mustard – ½ teaspoon
  • Asafotida powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Remove the skin from banana and cut it into medium size pieces and put it in water.
Dry fry red chillies, coriander seeds, pepper, fenugreek and powder it coarsely.
Soak tamarind in ¼ cup water and take out thick juice. (Or you can use tamarind paste mixed with ¼ cup water).
In a kadai put the oil and when it is hot add mustard. When it pops up add asafetida powder and curry leaves. Then add banana pieces along with turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and stir fry for few minutes. Add tamarind juice and sprinkle two to three handful of water and mix well. Close with lid and cook till the banana is soft. Remove the lid and keep it on low flame till it absorbed all the water and dry. Then sprinkle the ground chilli powder and again stir fry for few more seconds.

  5. I usually make this at home but I use only red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Your idea of putting coriander seed, fenugreek and pepper seems good. Shall try it sometime.

  9. Yet another awesome recipe. Tried it today and luved it. Thanks.

  10. A Suggestion – It would be very handy to have a separate tab for Poriyal in your main categories menu. I’ve noticed it at the bottom of the page but still having it on the top will be useful. I wasn’t aware of how many varieties you’ve got in this section. We love your recipes and this is the first site we come to for any recipe. Thanks again. 🙂
