Ingredients

  • Rawa – 1 cup

  • Green Gram Dhal – 1/4 cup

  • Coconut gratings – 2 to 3 tablespoons

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste

  • For seasoning
  • Oil – 3 to 4 teaspoons

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Urad dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Bengal gram dhal – 1 teaspoon

  • Pepper and Jeera – Crushed coarsely 1 teaspoon

  • Red chillies – 2 to 3

  • Fresh ginger – a small piece chopped finely

  • Cashewnuts – few (Optional)

Directions

  • Soak green gram dal in water for about one hour.
  • In a thick-bottomed kadai, heat the oil and when hot, add mustard, urad dal, Bengal gram dal, cashew nuts, pepper, and jeera (coarsely powdered), along with broken red chillies and chopped ginger. Fry until the dals turn light brown.
  • Then, add rava to the seasoning and fry briefly until it emits a pleasant aroma (no need to fry for long). Let it cool.
  • Add the soaked dal (after draining any excess water), coconut gratings, and salt. Mix well.
  • Gradually sprinkle water and knead into a dough. Cover and let it rest for ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Take a small lemon-sized portion of dough, flatten it with your fingers to form kozhukattai, and place it on an idli plate. Steam cook for ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Serve with your chutney of choice.
