Javvarisi Kozhukattai

Javvarisi Kozhukattai is a delightful Indian snack made from soaked sago pearls. To prepare, first rinse the sago thoroughly and soak it with a sprinkle of water for 30 to 45 minutes. Meanwhile, mix grated coconut with sugar and cardamom powder to create a sweet filling. After soaking, knead the sago with salt to form a thick dough, or blend it for easier consistency. Shape small portions of the dough into cups, fill them with the coconut mixture, and seal them into balls. Finally, steam the prepared balls in an idli or kozhukattai plate for about 15 minutes until cooked. Enjoy this sweet treat as a snack or dessert!

The English name for Javvarisi is Sago.

A sweet recipe made with Javvarisi (sago) and coconut gratings

Ingredients

  • Javvarisi (Sago) – 1 cup

  • Coconut Gratings – 2 tablespoons

  • Sugar – 2 to 3 teaspoons

  • Cardamom Powder – a pinch

  • Salt – 1/4 teaspoon

Directions

  • Wash the Sago in water for 2 to 3 times.  Put it in a bowl and sprinkle a handful of water.  Close with a lid and allow to soak for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • In a small bowl put the coconut gratings and add sugar and cardamom powder.  Mix well and keep it aside.
  • Now, add salt to the soaked sago and knead it to a thick dough.  If making the dough is difficult, place the soaked sago in a mixie. Run it for two to three rounds to make the dough.
  • Take a lemon size dough. Make a cup like making for Modak. Put a teaspoon of coconut stuffing in it. Close it and make a ball.  Finish all the dough like this.
  • Add the balls in the idli or kozhukattai plate and steam it for 15 minutes.
