The Jamun fruit, also known as Naaval Pazham, Nagapazham, Nagapalam, and Naavalpalam in Tamil or Java Plum, Black Plum, Jambul, and Indian blackberry, is a valuable yet unassuming fruit.

This fruit is packed with essential nutrients like iron, minerals, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Additionally, it has cooling properties and can help boost digestion.
This fruit is believed to be beneficial for individuals with diabetes, as well as for blood purification purposes. Additionally, the seeds of this fruit are utilized in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine to treat digestive issues. Individuals with diabetes can safely consume this fruit or its juice without causing a spike in blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, the fruit’s tart taste and the fact that it stains the tongue with a purple hue have prevented it from being a popular choice at the dining table.
The fruit, once commonly found being sold on street corners and in front of schools at a low price, is now becoming more expensive. This is due to limited cultivation on a large scale and the need for the fruit to travel long distances before reaching consumers. It is a seasonal fruit and available from June to August. If you happen to see this fruit in the market, do not hesitate to buy it.
