On Festival days, some people will not add onion or sombu (aniseed) and some other masalas in the dishes. This Vadai is prepared without onion and hence it is called “Festival Vadai”.
I got this recipe from a magazine. This is NO ONION/NO TOMATO sambar. Still it tastes good and similar to Udupi Hotel Sambar.
Mango dhal is Andhra’s classic dish. Normally both dhal and mangos are cooked together and seasoned with other spices. Mango may be added with or without skin according to one’s own taste. I cooked mango with skin separately and added to the cooked dhal.
