Discover how to make a tangy and spicy onion tomato chutney, a popular accompaniment in Indian cuisine. Perfect for dosa, idli, vada, or as a spread!

Ingredients

  • Onion – 1

  • Tomato – 1

  • Red Chillies – 5 to 6

  • Bengal gram dal – 1 tablespoon

  • Urad Dal – 1 tablespoon

  • Peanut – 1 tablespoon

  • White til seeds (Ellu) – 1 teaspoon

  • Tamarind – a gooseberry size

  • Hard asafoetida – a pea size

  • Oil – 2 teaspoons

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • In a frying pan, heat a teaspoon of oil over medium heat. Add asafoetida, Bengal gram dal, urad dal, peanuts, and til seeds. Sauté until the dals turn a light brown color.
  • Incorporate tamarind and red chillies into the mixture. Fry briefly, then remove the pan from heat.
  • In the same pan, add an additional teaspoon of oil. Sauté the onion pieces for about a minute.
  • Add the tomato pieces and continue to sauté for another minute.
  • Once the mixture has cooled, combine all the sautéed ingredients with salt in a blender or food processor. Process until you achieve a smooth paste.

Notes

  • Seasoning is optional and if you want you can season it with mustard and curry leaves.
