Pumpkin Moong Dal Halwa is a delicious and nutritious dessert made from ripe yellow pumpkin and moong dal. To prepare it, start by grating two cups of peeled pumpkin. Cook the washed moong dal in water until soft. In a kadai, heat ghee to fry cashew nuts and set them aside. In the same pan, sauté the grated pumpkin until it absorbs moisture and becomes tender. Combine the cooked moong dal with the pumpkin, add sugar, and cook until thickened. Finally, mix in the remaining ghee, fried cashews, and cardamom powder. Transfer the mixture to a greased bowl to set and enjoy this delightful, sweet treat!
This halwa is made with yellow pumpkin (Parangikai) and moong dhal.

I like your website . The method / explanation of all the receipes is very clear and helpful.
Thank you Kala Srinivasan for your kind words.
How long we should cook the halwa after adding sugar for getting the correct “halwa patham”
Hi Jayanthi,
After adding sugar, it will take approx 10 to 15 minutes to get the halwa consistency.
In the same kadai, put one more teaspoon ghee and fry the pumpkin gratings till the water content is absorbed and cooked soft and dry.
IS ONE TEASPOON OF GHEE IS SUFFICIENT TO COOK THE GRATED PUMPKINS?
RAW PUMPKINS ARE GRATED RIGHT?
HOW ABOUT STEAM OR BOIL THE PUMPKIN SLICES AND MASHING IT? SORRY.
NOT TRYING TO CHANGE YOUR RECEIPE BUT JUST OUT OF CURIOUSITY.
Your receipes are great anyway. Love your website.
Hi Yoges Sundar,
Yes. 1 teaspoon ghee is sufficient for frying, since we add ghee at the end of cooking.
Yes. Raw pumpkin is grated.
Yes. You steam cook or even cook with little water and mash it. In fact I have already posted plain pumpkin halwa (wherein I cooked the pumpkin in water and mashed).
Thank you for writing and you are most welcome to share your ideas with me.
Dear Kamala
PL. let me know how to prepare sampa rice for chidabaram kosthu
Dr.Swamy
Dr Swamy,
It is very simple. Dry fry a tableslpoon of black pepper and half tablespoon jeeragam (cumin seeds) and powder it coarsely. Add this powder, salt and two to three teaspoons of ghee to a medium size bowl of cooked rice (preferably boiled rice (Puzhunkal arisi sadam). Mix it well. This is called samba sadam.
Thank you

Hi…
I just came across your page and all your recipes look tempting. Would like to try this pumpkin-moong halwa. But can you suggest someother sweetner other than sugar. Can jaggery be added? How will it work out.
TIA
Yes. You can try with jaggery which will also taste good.
