A healthy breakfast recipe made oats and aval. This is served with chutney and sambar.

Ingredients

  • Parboiled (idli) Rice – 2 cups

  • Urad dhal – ½ cup

  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 teaspoon

  • Oats – ½ cup

  • Aval (Poha) – ½ cup

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Soak rice and urad dhal separately for 5 to 6 hours. Fenugreek seeds can be added along with urad dhal.
  • Soak oats and aval together half-an-hour to one hour before grinding.
  • You can use mixie for grinding. Grind urad dhal and fenugreek to a soft paste. Then grind rice, oats and aval together to a coarse paste.
  • Mix all the paste together with salt and keep it overnight or atleast 8 hours for fermentation.
  • Then make idli as usual.

  9. Can grinder be used for grinding ? Will it come out well ? I have tried to add oats to idli measures. Idli is out of shape if it is ground using grinder

  13. Since we are grinding and fermenting the oats, can we use old fashioned rolled oats? It’s more nutritious than instant oats. Thank you for such healthy recipes!

    Do you know if its ok to add Eno to serve idli to 7 month baby?

    • Hi Alesha,

      You can use old fashioned rolled oats too. For 7 months baby, I do not recommend any chemicals like eno etc. You can go for plain idli or without adding cooking soda or eno.

    Is it rolled oats, instant/quick cooking oats?
