Ingredients

  • Tomato – 1

  • Big Onion – 1

  • Garlic flakes – 4

  • Red Chillies – 4

  • Tamarind – small gooseberry size

  • Oil – 2 teaspoons

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon or as per taste

  • For seasoning
  • Oil – 1 teaspoon

  • Mustard – 1/2 teaspoon

Directions

  • Start by peeling the onion and chopping it into medium-sized pieces. Wash the tomato and cut it into small pieces. Also, peel the garlic flakes.
  • Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a small kadai. Add red chillies and fry them for a few seconds, then remove and set aside.
  • In the same kadai, add the garlic flakes and fry them until they start to change color slightly. Add the chopped onion next and sauté for a while until they start to soften.
  • Next, incorporate the tomato pieces and tamarind into the kadai, frying everything together until the tomatoes break down and mash well.
  • Once the mixture has cooled, transfer all the fried ingredients to a mixie jar, add salt, and grind everything to a coarse paste.
  • For the final touch, heat a little oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. Then, stir this seasoning into the coarse paste to enhance the flavors.
  • Your freshly made chutney is now ready to be served with idli, dosa, or as a side for other meals.
