Masiyal is a simple and comforting South Indian dish. It is made by mashing vegetables with dal (lentils). The dish includes a mild tempering of spices. Vegetables like spinach, pumpkin, brinjal, or ridge gourd are used. They are cooked until soft and then mashed to a smooth or slightly coarse consistency. The dish is lightly spiced with green chilies, turmeric, and tamarind for a subtle tang. A tempering of mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, and asafoetida in hot oil enhances the flavor. Masiyal is nutritious, easy to digest, and pairs well with steamed rice and ghee, making it a wholesome everyday meal.

This dish is a simple and nutritious South Indian recipe made with greens and lentils. Start by soaking green gram dal for thirty minutes. Prepare the ingredients by rinsing and finely chopping the greens, dicing the onion and tomato, and slitting the green chilies. In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked dal with the chopped vegetables. Add garlic, cumin, turmeric, salt and half a cup of water. Cook until one whistle sounds, then remove from heat and mash the mixture thoroughly. This flavorful dish requires no extra seasoning and is best served with hot rice. Hi Rekha,
Thank you for your suggestion for video. However, cooking, taking video and publishing will consume more time and need other’s help to take video when you cook. For the time being I am just cooking and posting the recipes with photos only. Will try to add video in future if time permits. Thank you once again for the interest shown in my recipes.
Hi Kamala
Came across this recipe and wanted to confirm that you have used paasi paruppu (yellow split gram dal, i.e. yellow moong dal or whole green gram dal). Your recipe calls for green gram dal and in the picture it looks like split yellow moong dal.
Thank you.
