Learn how to make a delicious and nutritious Green Gram Dhal soup. This recipe includes step-by-step instructions and helpful tips.

  • Green Gram dhal – ¾ cup

  • Green Chillies – 2

  • Fresh ginger – small piece

  • Jeera – 1 teaspoon

  • Asafoetida – ¼ teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • Ghee – 2 tablespoons

  • Pepper Powder – ½ teaspoon

  • Salt – as required

  • Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon

  • Wash the dhal thoroughly and transfer it to a pressure cooker. Slit the green chilies lengthwise and finely chop the ginger. Add these to the dhal.
  • Add 6 cups of water, turmeric powder, and a teaspoon of ghee to the pressure cooker. Secure the lid and cook under pressure for two whistles. Allow the cooker to naturally release pressure before opening.
  • Once cool, blend the cooked dhal in a blender until smooth. Strain the mixture through a sieve to obtain a smooth liquid. Set aside.
  • Heat ghee in a kadai over medium heat. Fry the bread pieces until they turn light brown. Remove them and set aside for garnish.
  • In the same kadai, add cumin seeds and sauté briefly until aromatic. Stir in the asafetida powder.
  • Pour the strained dhal liquid into the kadai, stirring well to combine with the spices. Add salt and bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Let it simmer for two minutes before turning off the heat.
  • Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and a sprinkle of pepper powder for an extra kick.
  • Garnish the soup with the fried bread croutons.
  • Serve hot and enjoy your nourishing dhal soup!
