This straightforward Keerai Masiyal recipe involves pressure cooking spinach along with green gram dal.

Ingredients

  • Keerai (Greens) – 1 bunch

  • Green Gram Dhal – ½ cup

  • Garlic flakes – 10

  • Onion (Medium size) – 1

  • Tomato (Medium size) – 1

  • Green Chillies – 2

  • Jeera (Cumin) – 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – a pinch

  • Salt – 1 teaspoon or as per taste

Directions

  • Soak the green gram dal in water for about thirty minutes.
  • Rinse and finely chop the greens. Finely dice the onion and tomato. Slit the green chilies lengthwise.
  • In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked dal, chopped greens, onion, tomato, green chilies, garlic flakes, cumin, turmeric powder, and salt, then add half a cup of water. Cook until you hear one whistle.
  • Then remove and mash the mixture well. It requires no additional seasoning.
  • Serve it with hot rice.

Notes

  • You can also cook it in an open vessel. Be careful not to overcook it. If desired, you can season it with a bit of mustard and urad dal. When serving with hot rice, consider adding a teaspoon of ghee to the rice.

      Thank you for your suggestion for video. However, cooking, taking video and publishing will consume more time and need other’s help to take video when you cook.     Came across this recipe and wanted to confirm that you have used paasi paruppu (yellow split gram dal, i.e. yellow moong dal or whole green gram dal). Your recipe calls for green gram dal and in the picture it looks like split yellow moong dal.
