This spicy powder goes well with idli and dosa. It is usually mixed with gingelly (sesame seed) oil when serving with idli or dosa.


  • Red Chillies – 1 cup

  • Bengal gram dhal – ½ cup

  • Urad dhal – ½ cup

  • Asafoetida – gooseberry size (or half teaspoon powder)

  • Oil – 1 tablespoon

  • Salt – 2 teaspoon


  • Fry asafoetida, dhals and red chillies separately in a teaspoon of oil.
  • When it is lukewarm add salt and grind to a coarse powder.
  • Store it in an airtight container.
  • This powder goes well with idli/dosa.
  • Tips:
  • You can also add a tablespoon of til seeds along with dhal.

    Your recipes are awesome.. I checked in your site for Ellu milagai podi preparation method not able to find..fragrance of til enhances the taste of idli milagai podi.. I tasted it once in one of my friends house ..It was so good..Can you please provide the recipe for the same..

    • Hi Dhivya,

      For Ellu Milagai Podi – same ingredients as in the Idli Milagai Podi, but you have to add til seeds (dry fry and add) and make this podi.

      One cup holds normally 100 to 110 grams and it is also depends upon the type of ingredient you are measuring. For Indian cooking, use any size tea cup and use the same cup for measuring all other ingredients called for in a particular recipe.
